SNCF and the Marseille-Ventimiglia Line
SIG4 Engineering is particularly pleased to contribute to the development of the safety case required for the new signaling system on the Marseille-Ventimiglia line.
This project involves removing the existing signaling system (Block Automatique Lumineux: BAL) and replacing it, with no possibility of reverting, with the European ETCS Level 2 signaling system. The functional and safety challenges are huge, with multiple stakeholders involved, and the safety approach has to be aligned with these high stakes. SNCF has entrusted SIG4 Engineering to contribute to the preliminary risk analyses, to frame the remaining safety studies to be carried out, and to promote the overall safety approach to the various certification bodies (Certifer, EPSF).
Update 01.13.2026: SNCF has renewed its confidence in SIG4 Engineering and commissioned it to carry out the various safety studies identified in the Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA). This work consists of analysing all the hazards (approximately 90) described and concluding whether or not they are acceptable. Acceptability can be determined by imposing certain risk reduction measures allocated to the various subsystems, based on the GAME (Globally At Least Equivalent)’ argument, or by probabilistic implausibility. SIG4 is therefore continuing its adventure in the south of France, on one of the most ambitious projects in the country to date.
